Rewind...
A couple of weeks ago, I started Shakeology. This is a meal replacement protein shake that is FANTASTIC! Not only is it yummy, but it is full of nutrients. (Check out shakeology.com for more information.) I started using this item once a day to replace one meal. For example, today I got short on time and used the shakeology as lunch with almond milk, peanut butter and frozen strawberry. Shakeology is a Beachbody.com product like P90X. It also comes with a 30 minute and 50 minute workout. This is how I started my workout journey. And, to be honest, it is a great workout for getting off your...couch.
I discovered quickly that I was very challenged with anything that required flexibility. My muscles were tight even with stretching. I am a huge fan of massage therapy and am now working with a massage therapist who specializes in deep tissue, myofascial, stretching and other theraputic massage techniques. I think Ms. Y has made a huge impact on my ability to work out.
When I saw Ms Y for the first time two weeks ago, I could not rotate my head much past 45 degrees from center. I had limited flexibility in most of my joints. When I left, after two hours, I could rotate my head past 90 degrees from center and felt bouncy! I felt like I had worked out really hard and it did take me a few days to recover.
Fast forward....to today. Day 2 of P90X and I still very glad I decided to start this workout program.
Today was a bit more challenging as the workout is Plyometrics which in 80's terms is Calisthenics. This is a high intensity, high impact workout. Although they did provide some modified options, I still had to make adjustments for my personal limitations. But, I STILL DID IT! If I couldn't figure out how to adjust the exercise, I just kept moving. I danced around, went side to side, marched in place...anything to keep my heart rate up. I worked up a big sweat on this one. It felt great!
And, more importantly, I discovered something during the cool down. As I was hanging, bent over at the waist, swinging my arms back and forth, I noticed the floor. And, more accurately how close it was. I can touch the floor with slightly bent knees. I am only about an inch from touching with my feet together and legs straight. THIS WAS SOMETHING I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO IN FOREVER!
I think the massage helped, and just the little bit of working out helped. I will keep going because now I want to put my hands flat on the floor!
My favorite exercise today was the Mary Katherine Lunge. Yes...it is exactly what you are thinking from the SNL skit...I said "Superstar" everytime I lunged. My sweet husband had the kindness in his heart not to laugh out loud at me.
Tomorrow is Day 3 and we will definately be up at 530am for a shoulder and arms workout. And, God help me, I am looking forward to it. I am finding that anytime I am not active, I want to be moving. Just standing talking to someone I want to bounce, move, sway... Just 2 days into P90X and I feel like a different person. I can't wait to see how I feel in 88 more days!
